I really enjoyed the book "Underground Airlines," about an alternate history where Lincoln was assassinated in 1861 and four US states never abandoned slavery. There was some controversy because the author, Ben Winters, is white, and the main character, an escaped slave who has been forced to work as a bounty hunter, is black. Nevertheless, this book made me think about slavery and racism, as well as the cruel, contemporary forms slavery assumes when shaped by post-Fordist capitalism.
