As a person who has been a gamer for well over 30 years, there is no question that there has been a major aesthetic shift since Agricola, at least in the niche of hobbyist games. Recent hotness includes: Terraforming Mars (very highly derivative from Agricola), Scythe (point-salad engine building and the most non-interactive putatively 4x game I've ever seen), The Colonists and Feast for Odin (overwrought doorstop point-salads).
