There are rules, but not many of them. There are guidelines and a thematic framework, but it’s really about sitting around a table with some friends and talking them into killing someone other than you. It’s the ultimate poorly-defined social space, and it sets you loose within it. And when set loose in such a place, we’re all sociopaths.

She began publishing later in life (her first novel at age 54), and wrote more than forty under several pseudonyms. But she used her own name for the works that made her a fixture in science fiction and fantasy. Her most influential works straddle lines between her forebears and her peers; she sits among Margaret Atwood and Marge Piercy's second-wave-feminist parables, and somewhere alongside the all-out otherworlds of Frank Herbert and Jack Vance.

And for something like 20-30 years, that arcade in Tomorrowland was definitely one of the best on the West coast, and they had all kinds of rarer older titles along with newer cutting edge ones, and they had plenty of space and competent technicians to keep things working. They also had the fastest air hockey tables I've ever seen. They must have put out brand new pucks every day.

There are no English (or German for that matter) subtitles. Other than that, ALL episodes have the original music.

Hi Linda, It’s an inflammatory reaction caused by a gut infection / small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Symptoms flare when you provide carbs to the gut microbes. Add carbs in very slowly in order to start building a more diverse microbiome. Optimize vitamin A and D to improve gut immunity. Do intermittent fasting and circadian rhythm entrainment. Eat healthy acids (vinegar, malic acid, vitamin C) and take bile supports (egg yolks, taurine, glycine). You’ll have to build up immunity and gradually normalize your diet. Best, Paul

Computer latency: 1977-2017
http://ift.tt/2BJYJZI
It’s a bit absurd that a modern gaming machine running at 4,000x the speed of an apple 2, with a CPU that has 500,000x as many transistors (with a GPU that has 2,000,000x as many transistors) can maybe manage the same latency as an apple 2 in very carefully coded applications if we have a monitor with nearly 3x the refresh rate. It’s perhaps even more absurd that the default configuration of the powerspec g405, which had the fastest single-threaded performance you could get until October 2017, had more latency from keyboard-to-screen (approximately 3 feet, maybe 10 feet of actual cabling) than sending a packet around the world (16187 mi from NYC to Tokyo to London back to NYC, more due to the cost of running the shortest possible length of fiber). On the bright side, we’re arguably emerging from the latency dark ages and it’s now possible to assemble a computer or buy a tablet with latency that’s in the same range as you could get off-the-shelf in the 70s and 80s.

Behind the Fall and Rise of China's Xiaomi via Instapaper http://ift.tt/2BkjcQl Wang says the strategy aims to reduce “pain points” for Chinese consumers. He points to air pollution, a serious issue in China. Quality air purifiers cost roughly $500, he says. So Xiaomi funded a startup with an air-pollution expert, offering help with design and manufacturing, access to its supply chain, and lessons of its own low-cost operating efficiency. The result: the Mi Air Purifier 2, which sells for $105. It’s connected to smartphones, allowing users to monitor the air in their homes, and receive alerts when the filter needs changing.

This was consistent with a June poll from Mozilla and Ipsos that showed 81 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of Republicans are in favor of net neutrality.

Roll has grown on me. When I first played it I liked how all the game mechanics fit together and the nice decisions about building your tableau and generating enough income, but it just seemed kinda random - too random really. Not so much about the dice; I like the way the different dice work quite a bit. It was more about the tile draws. Sometimes you get nice, synergizing tiles and sometimes you waste turns of exploring trying to find something that remotely works. The card game has the same thing of course, but you cycle *much* more quickly in the card game and see a lot more cards. In Roll, the homeward combo plus your initial tile draws can make a huge difference; good matches and you can just start playing, otherwise you may still be digging for something, anything, after everyone else already has an engine going. I've been saddled with Space Pirates plus Epsilon Eridani a couple times, and it's a terrible combo - no dice into the cup initially, no production world, and a very poor early-game money generation power, when money is so critical. It makes to tough to win. Given all this, I think the explore action is a little pricey and there aren't enough exploration-booster tiles in the bad. Also, the iconography is not great. After the crisp, clear Race for the Galaxy design, Roll for the Galaxy is a bit of a muddled mess and you end up having to fall back to the text, which (of course) is too small and not readable enough. Still, I think this can all be true - it probably is - and the game can still be quite fun, even very good - which I think it probably is. Like Race, sometimes you don't get the cards, and it's a game about managing and coping with a quickly-changing playing environment, one where you not only have to manage your own stuff but take advantage of everyone else's actions. The dice management strategies are related to, but quite different from, Race. The game is streamlined, plays quickly and easily, it's great that there is so much simultaneous plotting and so limited downtime (a recurring bugbear for dice games). There is a lot to like. I suspect the balance probably isn't quite where it should be, but it's close enough to make for a fun game. Strategy Note: Early game income is of course the key. You have to do everything in your power to get some kind of income engine going early, at the expense of any kind of long-term strategy. You can develop strategy once you've got the means to support cycling enough dice to give you options. Just a random note: Race was really terrific as a 2-player game. Roll is just OK, and is much better multiplayer. 3 or 4 is probably the sweet spot. 5 is fine too.

Suddenly it’s meant to make the entire building beyond critique; it’s already part of our city.”

Knuth: Infrequently Asked Questions

The time in which I write ... has a horribly swollen belly, it carries in its womb a national catastrophe ... Even an ignominious issue remains something other and more normal than the judgment that now hangs over us, such as once fell on Sodom and Gomorrah ... That it approaches, that it long since became inevitable: of that I cannot believe anybody still cherishes the smallest doubt. ... That it remains shrouded in silence is uncanny enough. It is already uncanny when among a great host of the blind some few who have the use of their eyes must live with sealed lips. But it becomes sheer horror, so it seems to me, when everybody knows and everybody is bound to silence, while we read the truth from each other in eyes that stare or else shun a meeting. Germany ... today, clung round by demons, a hand over one eye, with the other staring into horrors, down she flings from despair to despair. When will she reach the bottom of the abyss? When, out of uttermost hopelessness --- a miracle beyond the power of belief --- will the light of hope dawn? A lonely man folds his hands and speaks: ``God be merciful to thy poor soul, my friend, my Fatherland!'' -- Thomas Mann, Dr. Faustus (1947, written in 1945)

Heb. nephilim, meaning "violent" or "causing to fall" ( Genesis 6:4 ). These were the violent tyrants of those days, those who fell upon others. The word may also be derived from a root signifying "wonder," and hence "monsters" or "prodigies." In Numbers 13:33 this name is given to a Canaanitish tribe, a race of large stature, "the sons of Anak." The Revised Version, in these passages, simply transliterates the original, and reads "Nephilim."

The Last Jedi: our spoiler-free review - The Verge
http://ift.tt/2Bh5FMT
And Johnson is certainly aware of how far and how fast he’s pushing this well-worn narrative. His characters repeatedly talk about the need to put the past aside, to make their own choices and accept the future, to discard everything they’ve been holding onto, because it’s been holding them back. The “let it go” theme is so pronounced that it sometimes feels like a repudiation of both The Force Awakens and the fandom itself. Last Jedi is often a painful, mournful film about loss: as the bleak story unfolds, the characters lose allies and friends and family, agency and options, treasured illusions and ideals. They lose significant objects tied to their identities. They lose confidence and cockiness and hope. Some of them lose their lives. Not all those losses are defeats, but it’s unmistakable how much of the Star Wars mythos lovingly re-created and embraced in The Force Awakens crumbles to ash in The Last Jedi, and how the series’s wisest characters embrace that process as a painful but necessary rebirth.

Why were women who had endured sexual misconduct afraid of being slandered for coming forward? Because Maureen Dowd showed them what it would look like.

The influence of testosterone on human aggression - Archer - 1991 - British Journal of Psychology - Wiley Online Library
http://ift.tt/2BzPuu6
Animal studies show clear evidence for a causal link between testosterone and aggression. This review assesses studies involving androgens, principally testosterone, and human aggression. Evidence for a possible effect of prenatal androgens is inconclusive. In adults, higher testosterone levels are found in groups selected for high levels of aggressiveness. Correlations between testosterone and aggression were low when hostility inventories were used, but higher (r = .38) when aggressiveness was rated by others. Regression analysis data and studies of boys at puberty were inconclusive. Other studies show that the outcome of aggressive and competitive encounters can alter testosterone levels, thus confounding interpretation of the correlational evidence. The design of future studies to reveal evidence of a causal link is considered. Suggestions concerning two important methodological problems, the experimental manipulation of hormone levels and the nature of the dependent variable, are made.

My memories of Phil are overwhelmingly of a sweet and gentle and loving man, which is not to say that he didn’t have a temper, as anyone who knew him well will tell you. He was a sensitive person, and he was incapable of masking his anger. He would never sit and stew, or leave an argument unresolved. One night, when Cooper was five months old, I left him alone with Phil for the first time to join a friend who had invited me to a Marc Jacobs show. When I returned, Cooper was crying—he wouldn’t take the bottle and had been bawling the entire time. Phil yelled, “You are never leaving the apartment again. I don’t have breasts! I can’t feed him!” Then he handed me Cooper and stormed out onto our balcony for a smoke. A few minutes later, he slunk back in, and we both started laughing.

On July 30, 2004, Chiba filed a lawsuit against the Smith family for 15% of his earnings (over $1 million), claiming that she and Smith lived as "husband and wife",[81] that the singer pledged to take care of her financially for the rest of her life, and that she worked as his manager and agent from around 2000 until his death.[82] A state labor commissioner ruled her claim as manager to be invalid, as she had worked as an "unlicensed talent agent" under California's Talent Agencies Act. The case made it to the California appellate court in October 2007, but was defeated 2–1; Chiba could potentially appeal the case to the Supreme Court of California.[83]

In the past, words usually came second for Elverum, but this time he sat down at a desk in the room where his wife had passed, across the hall from his daughter’s bedroom, and wrote lyrics out, longhand; some of them came directly from notes he had scribbled for himself in between hospital appointments or chemotherapy treatments. He recorded these songs in Geneviève’s room, too, mostly on acoustic guitar and with just one microphone and a laptop, at night when his daughter was sleeping or in stolen moments when she was at play dates with neighborhood friends.

Some people think they need to pay a fortune to a university for a great education. But the top schools have all their courses online for free. And this isn’t just about locations. Some people think they need expensive equipment to start a new hobby, certain clothes to look the part, or for everything to be just right. But resourceful people know they don’t. It’s so important to separate the real goal from the old mental associations. We have old dreams. We have images we want to re-create. They’re hard to untangle from the result we really want. They become excuses, and reasons to procrastinate.

Against the Attention Economy: Short Stories Are Not Quick Literary Fixes | Literary Hub
http://ift.tt/2AUTh58
But the short story boom never came. Instead, we’ve seen the mainstream venues for literary short fiction dry up. Often, the only contact the general reading public has with short fiction is in The New Yorker. Prestige publications remain in the form of The Paris Review, Tin House, Zyzzyva, Granta, Harper’s, and The Literary Review. But if you were to pull a random person off the street and ask them about the last short story they read, I imagine you’d receive, at first, a confused silence, and then maybe a title by Hemingway or Flannery O’Connor. “Hills Like White Elephants” or “A Good Man is Hard to Find” or “Everything That Rises Must Converge.” What I hear these days is a kind of shellacked amusement. Editors and writers who repeat, in the beat after and following a soft laugh, “Wow, I’m surprised we aren’t reading more short fiction. Attention spans!”

It means bouncing a little child on your knee, and noticing for the first time that his smile is like your own, and then when you suffer because he does, you understand what it means to have joy in your posterity.

Divorce rates up for Americans 50 and older, led by Baby Boomers | Pew Research Center
http://ift.tt/2n4iqDI
During their young adulthood, Baby Boomers had unprecedented levels of divorce. Their marital instability earlier in life is contributing to the rising divorce rate among adults ages 50 and older today, since remarriages tend to be less stable than first marriages. The divorce rate for adults ages 50 and older in remarriages is double the rate of those who have only been married once (16 vs. eight per 1,000 married persons, respectively). Among all adults 50 and older who divorced in 2015, 48% had been in their second or higher marriage.

Ursula K. Le Guin: Who Cares About the Great American Novel? | Literary Hub
http://ift.tt/2iWnbPr
Greatness, in the sense of outstanding or unique accomplishment, is a cryptogendered word. In ordinary usage and common understanding, “a great American” means a great American man, “a great writer” means a great male writer. To regender the word, it must modify a feminine noun (“a great American woman,” “a great woman writer”). To degender it, it must be used in a locution such as “great Americans/writers, both men and women . . .” Greatness in the abstract, in general, is still thought of as the province of men.

Well, there’s a kind of space that’s not really connected to anything like my age or life-status. What I’m looking for is fun. You could also call it a certain energy—or a deep-well—but whatever you call it, it’s just the space where, when your mind goes there, you don’t get filled with dread. Where instead you go, “Oh, that. That’ll be fun.” And that’s still the same for me. I can remember way back when I was writing CivilWarLand, this all was a big revelation to me—to be able to shuck off that big backpack with all those conceptual or academic expectations. To be able to see that there’s a person on the other end of these stories. So all I’m trying to do is honor that person’s attention with my attention. But since she’s not in the room I have to honor her with what I put on the page so that when it comes off the page, she’ll feel like: Oh, there’s a person here talking to me. It sounds really simple and it was actually. It was just this little mental move. There’s a moment when you become aware that you’re carting around a lot of bullshit ideas and the move is the consent that you make to wriggle free and drop them. When you’re able to just see writing as this simple dialogue and you say: I consent to my role as an intimate partner in this exchange.

His behavior to the staff there was so demanding and rude that no one wanted to work with him, and in any case there was no one there who was elevated enough for him to deign to deal with. Roald was a tremendous charmer . . . but his behavior at Knopf grew more and more erratic and churlish. Secretaries were treated like servants, tantrums were thrown both in person and in letters, and when Bob Bernstein, as head of Random House, didn’t accede to his immoderate and provocative financial demands, we sensed anti-Semitic undertones in his angry response.

ou should not only have packaging lined up, you should pack the items ahead of time so you need only affix the address label once it sells. When I'm batch listing I always take pictures one night, pack and measure (box dimensions and weight) the next, and list on the third night. BTW, another listing trick is to offer combined shipping. Some buyers are more inclined to try and win multiple auctions if you combine shipping and it can really cut down on your work while also increasing your sales. This probably wouldn't work as well for full-size games but it's great for moving smaller items. If I'm offering combined shipping I don't even fully seal the boxes when I'm prepacking; I just hold it together with one small piece of tape so I don't have to get out a knife if I have to combine two or more items. IMO, packing is the worst part so I make sure that's one of the first things I do so I don't run out of steam by the time it's time to list.

I'm just starting to learn the soprano saxophone and the intonation is quite difficult to get right. This tuner helps tremendously while I work on my intonation. One important feature of this KLIQ tuner over other tuners like the Snark SN5X Clip-On Tuner for Guitar, Bass & Violin (Current Model) is the transposition feature. The soprano and tenor saxophones are in the key of Bb, which means when you play the fingering for a C, the concert pitch that they actually play is a Bb. The alto saxophone is in the key of Eb. The KLIQ tuner can transpose these notes so that it displays the note that you are fingering. The Snark tuner can only transpose the displayed note 4 half steps down because it is designed for placing a capo on a guitar. Thus it will only cover instruments in the key of Db, D, Eb and E.

What might I have thought if, after seven hours of unrelenting agony, a creature the size of a full-grown cougar emerged, inch by inch, from the hole at the end of my penis and started hassling me for food? Was that what the cow was going through? Did she think she was dying, or had instinct somehow prepared her for this?

I only needed a few hours to reach an out-of-body experience where I watched myself fall heartlessly into the gameplay, into celebrating my correct dismissals and ignoring the slowly building, strangely gripping story of Eastern European repression. The game is perfectly amenable to players coming and going from that awareness, dropping in just enough reminders of both its game-like giddiness and somber reflection to avoid coming off as heavy-handed. In fact, the keen, interactive treatment of repressive regimes, combined with smoothly ramping play, makes this a fine point of entry into the serious games genre for someone who might otherwise scoff.

John Lasseter's Pattern of Alleged Misconduct Detailed by Disney/Pixar Insiders | Hollywood Reporter
http://ift.tt/2iEkbnj
Multiple sources at Pixar and in the animation community spoke with THR about Lasseter's alleged behavior but asked not to be named out of fear that their careers in the tight-knit animation community would be damaged. Based on their accounts, the alleged incident involving Jones was not an isolated occurrence. One longtime Pixar employee says Lasseter, who is well-known for hugging employees and others in the entertainment community, was also known by insiders for "grabbing, kissing, making comments about physical attributes." Multiple sources say Lasseter is known to drink heavily at company social events such as premiere parties, but this source says the behavior was not always confined to such settings.

The problem is as simple as it is intractable. In 2012 a call center in India was busted for making 8 million calls in eight months to collect made-up bills. The Federal Trade Commission has since broken up at least 13 similar scams. In most cases, regulators weren’t able to identify the original perpetrators because the data files had been sold and repackaged so many times. Victims have essentially no recourse to do anything but take the abuse.

He’ll spend seven hours gathering three-quarters of a pound of clover—enough to fill a steamer trunk. “I do it at night, with a headlamp,” he said. The first course was served on a slab of sawed wood. It was a small rectangle of what looked like salami atop a curled cracker. He said, “It takes me sixteen to eighteen months to make cedar flour. I use a pull knife, a two-handled grater, to shave off some cedar under the bark. The shavings are bitter, tannic—inedible. I soak them in water. Every four to six weeks, I soak them. After a year or a year and a half, I can grind it into cedar flour. So the crisp is made from cedar flour, with a little hickory-nut oil, duck-egg-white powder, water, sea salt, which I sometimes render.” He produced a jar of sea salt from the sample table. “I made the batter and baked the crisp today.” The rectangle of meat, he said, was blue-foot chicken cured in pine-needle juice, pulp, and powder for eighteen months.

And she's basically given up on the traditional celebrity profile — long considered obligatory for stars of all levels. As she recently told Bill Simmons “I'm not a secretive person, but I am a private person, and other than podcasts, it's really hard to kind of have you as a person come across. I just got tired of sitting down for interviews and having some writer just write whatever they wanted to write.” Put differently, she got tired of writers mapping an understanding of her — as cool girl, as survivor of childhood tragedy — onto her otherwise complicated self. “There's a sense of irony that gets lost,” she continued, “especially with me, and I think with women in general...for some reason with men it's a little more forgiving if a writer takes their own idea of what the interview was, but I feel like with women it's so unforgiving.”

I live with the constant threat of possession, and a constant need to escape from possession, from control. So the death of Joan brought me in contact with the invader, the Ugly Spirit, and maneuvered me into a life long struggle, in which I have had no choice except to write my way out.

In early interviews, Theron claimed that her father had died in a car accident when she was just 15. But in 1998, police reports emerged detailing how Theron’s mother, Gerda, shot and killed her husband after he threatened to kill both her and Charlize. The shooting was ruled an act of self-defense; no charges were ever brought. When the real story broke, Theron never tried to deny it, but did not comment directly on it, save a single primetime special with Diane Sawyer “so that everyone would know and so we could demystify the whole thing,” as she later told Interview.

Jeppson had been home from an LDS mission less than two months and was on her way to a new job. Anthony Santos Cruz, 28, pleaded guilty to murder. A woman he was with, Michelle Vigil, was convicted of two counts of robbery. Motive: Fleeing police Method: Car crash Charges say Rivera stabbed Vigil "several times," put him in a chokehold until he lost consciousness, and then stomped on or kicked his head more than 70 times. Fernandez also allegedly punched and kicked Vigil in the head. Vigil belonged to a rival gang of the other two men.

I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I've sort of lost belief in anything really. But this work of yours is spectacular — absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers.... every department — casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome. From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.

Pro-Neutrality, Anti-Title II – Stratechery by Ben Thompson
http://ift.tt/2BuTolb
A classic example of this phenomenon is restaurants: who could possibly be against food safety? Then you read about how San Francisco requires 14 permits that take 9 months to issue (plus a separate alcohol permit) and you wonder why anyone opens a restaurant at all (compounded by the fact that already-permitted restaurants have a vested interest in making the process more onerous over time). Multiply that burden by all of the restaurants that never get created and the cost is very large indeed. This argument certainly applies to net neutrality in a far more profound way: the Internet has been the single most important driver of not just economic growth but overall consumer welfare for the last two decades. Given that all of that dynamism has been achieved with minimal regulatory oversight, the default position of anyone concerned about future growth should be maintaining a light touch. After all, regulation always has a cost far greater than what we can see at the moment it is enacted, and given the importance of the Internet, those costs are massively more consequential than restaurants or just about anything else. To put it another way, given the stakes, the benefit from regulation must be massive, which is why the “net neutrality” framing is so powerful: I’ll say it again — who can be against net neutrality? Telling stories about speech being restricted or new companies being unable to pay to access customers tap into both the Internet’s clear impact and the foregone opportunity cost I just described — businesses that are never built. That, though, is exactly the problem: opportunity costs are a reason to not regulate; clear evidence of harm are the reasons to do so despite the costs. What is so backwards about this entire debate is that those in favor of regulation are adopting the arguments of anti-regulators — postulating about future harms and foregone opportunities — while pursuing a regulatory approach that is only justified in the face of actual harm.

I would like to see a solo game based on the book Moby *****, something like that Nemo game from VPG. - You could cruise around and try to get whale oil - You have to juggle your harpooners and decide how to arrange your crews on the whaling boats - There could be a Starbuck track. He is the most competent crew member, and is bound by his Christian morality to obey Ahab, but if you push him too far he might take the blunderbuss/gun and shoot you in your sleep, thus damning himself to hell while saving the crew - There are like nine encounters with other whaling ships, and each of them involves transactions and/or potential conflict or competition for whales - There is a degree of existential horror that is right up there with HP Lovecraft Maybe it would look something like Eldritch Horror. I doubt it would ever be popular given the theme.

Attempting crock pot sous vide for the first time with a #dorkfood controller and an aquarium aerator. #saranwrap to reduce evaporation, and an inverted steamer basket to push the bagged chuck roast all the way down into the water. It should be ready in 30 hours. 130 degrees.

Doing It Yourself!! The best way to learn songs you like is by TRANSCRIBING songs yourself! seriously - that is the truth! So actually better than using tabs or songbooks or lessons is to work out songs on your own and make your own charts! It is nowhere as hard as you might think if you have never tried it - it is the way that generations of guitar players before you learnt to play!! And I have loads of lessons on it to help get you going... and just imagine, when you've developed your ear - you can work out whatever songs you like!! No need for tab at all - it's amazing and that is what "real" musicians do. In the old days nobody had tab - you think Jimi and Clapton got tabs off a web site???
