The Other State of Emergency

http://ift.tt/2FnP5dT

As it turns out – and this should come as no surprise – the two challenges are actually very closely linked. I'm not referring here to the tenuous, or at least too oblique, connection between climate change in the Middle East and the crisis in Syria. Nor am I talking about the horror of the refugees hounded out by the terrorists, by the wholesale destruction of their country, or about the way we have reacted to the matter. Rather, I'm referring to that hideous attraction whereby suicide bombers prefer death and the afterlife to an earthly existence in the now.

Agency and Autonomous Monsters in the Age of Fake News

http://ift.tt/2sOqImY

Abstract: This poster session will analyze the uses and abuses of digital rhetorics by the "alt-right," and explore the question of whether we are preparing our students for a treacherous and unstable reality, or providing aid and comfort to the enemy. Proposal: This poster session will explore one of the deep and abiding fears of teachers of rhetoric: that our methodologies, datasets, theories and instruction may be put to use in the service of powerful institutions and organizations that may not share our most deeply-held values. As a discipline, we both crave and fear the validation that the use and abuse of our rhetorical products entails. Hart-Davidson and Ridolfo, in their intriguing #rhetops project (RSA 2016) describe the abuses of rhetoric in asymmetrical conflicts, citing as examples the outsourcing of social media propaganda by Daesh (ISIL/ISIS), the rise of fake news bots and their influence on U.S. politics, the looming threat of autonomous writing technologies, and the fragmentation of authorship. I will trace some of the historical antecedents of these legitimate anxieties, and add to the list another potential threat, that of the misappropriation of digital, rhetorical tools and theories by what has come to be known collectively as the “alt-right.” The line between a tool and a weapon is often tentatively determined by ideology. This poster session will analyze that line and the ethics and problems associated with arming or empowering our students with powerful digital tools. Crispr Gene Editing Will Transform How We Eradicate Invasive Species | WIRED

http://ift.tt/2BGhoo6

About two years later, Kevin Esvelt, a geneticist then at Harvard University, put gene drives and Crispr together. Instead of poking a big fat glass needle loaded up with synthetic DNA into every organism that you want to change, you do it once, with a gene drive that encodes not only the gene you want (or the deactivation of the gene you don’t want) but also instructions to do that same manipulation with the Crispr technique in another genome. So when your altered organism mates, its chromosome gets to work, engineering the chromosome inherited from the mate too. This guarantees that the offspring has the desired change, plus the instructions to make the desired change. When the offspring reaches maturity and mates, the process repeats. In a perfect “global” gene drive, 100 percent of offspring have the gene drive carrying the desired trait.

This happened because I thought it would be smart to sleep in my car and save money by not getting a motel. My boss was coming back from being out of town the next day, at which point we were going to go to Wisconsin and work there for a few weeks where we had lodging set up. My shoes were wet from walking around in the fresh snow a bit, so I took them off. I had the heat on and figured my socks would dry out pretty quickly. Some time while I was asleep I ran out of gas. I figured I could just tough it out and figure something out in the morning. My feet hurt really bad for a while. Then they just stopped hurting, altogether. I went back to sleep. A few hours later, I tried to put my shoes back on, and found that my feet were frozen solid. My hands were very painful now, and were beginning to lose most of their mobility and sensation to touch. I contacted an ambulance and went to the hospital. Once the feet began to thaw, all of the pain came back. It has been the most painful thing I have ever experienced.

To find the heavens I’ve known throughout my life suddenly alive with a new and powerful presence, so other as to destabilize my familiar world. It was as if every electron in my body reversed and was now spinning in a new direction. I was struck dumb. Awestruck and wordless. I’d never been left so discomfited by any natural phenomenon. I was surprised by how the heavens I knew so well were changed and enlivened in an instant. I’ve often heard the word sublime, but now I understood it, and viscerally so. I still feel it in my mind’s eye.

The Big Debate: OnePlus, Good For The Industry Or Just Good At Marketing? | Androidheadlines.com

http://ift.tt/2BFOGnn

Ditto for its long history of missteps, from going back on its software support promises for older devices and cheating on benchmarks to strange design decisions that led to inverted display panels, highly dubious privacy policies that went as far as to allow it access to its customers’ phone numbers without their knowledge, and ridiculously weak e-commerce protections that compromised tens of thousands of credit cards around the world because some of the higher-ups probably wanted to save on the costs of some trivial thingy such as end-to-end encryption for transactions. Worst of all, that’s just the tip of the OnePlus iceberg, also known as “2017.” If OnePlus stopped pretending it’s a tiny startup that’s not selling rehashed OPPO devices and just advertised its offerings as delivering the best value in their price range, I’d respect the company a lot more. Even now, I feel like OxygenOS is the best custom Android implementation I ever saw in terms of responsiveness and believe that a handset with a high-end chip and plenty of RAM under $500 should be at the top of most smartphone lists for value-oriented consumers, even without stellar after-sales support and longevity you’d expect from a more expensive product. But until OnePlus stops looking up toward Samsung while tripping over its own corporate feet, nothing will improve its public image and these endless conversations about whether its brand is good or bad for the industry will never stop. As for its promotional activities, I wouldn’t just say OnePlus is good at marketing; the company’s track record with products makes me pretty convinced it’s too good at marketing given the state of its other divisions.

Those commentators called it proof that he had not won the election on his own, a particularly galling, if not completely accurate, charge for a president long concerned about his legitimacy. What followed was a two-day Twitter tirade that was unusually angry and defiant even by Mr. Trump’s standards. In his tweets on Sunday, Mr. Trump sought to shift the blame to Democrats for Russia’s meddling, saying that President Barack Obama had not done enough to stop the interference.

Brought up in the Mormon faith, he was barred from watching television until he was in the sixth grade. As a rambunctious teenager prone to discipline and academic lapses, he was dispatched by his parents to Fountain Valley School in Colorado. Chemical Cleaning Product Use Linked To Lung Function Decline Among Women: Study : Health : Tech Times

http://ift.tt/2ExL35o

Cleaners And Non-Cleaners Results of the study show evidence of lung function decline among the women who cleaned both professionally and at home, but more so among the professional cleaners. In fact, the decline in lung function capacity among cleaners was found to be comparable to smoking almost 20 pack-years. What's more, they also found higher asthma prevalence among the women who cleaned professionally and at home than the women who did not clean. "When you think of inhaling small particles from cleaning agents that are meant for cleaning the floor and not your lungs, maybe it is not so surprising after all," said lead study author Øistein Svanes. The team surmises that perhaps the decline comes as a result of the irritation caused by cleaning chemicals on the mucous membranes that line the airways.

Harari is abusing the word "humanism," as a canvas on which to paint his caricature of modern liberal culture ("liberal" in the classical sense, not in the sense of left-wing politics). He is not really interested in what humanist writers and philosophers have actually said, and does not reference their works. He claims that humanism promotes the belief in a supernatural free will (when in fact, humanists value agency and freedom, but have differing opinions on free will). He claims that humanism believes in an indivisible self/soul (when in fact, psychologists since Freud have a different understanding). And he claims that humanism believes that individuals always know best about their own needs (when in fact, many have emphasized the importance of education in our development--he does not even reference John Dewey). Harari also co-opts related terms that already have other established meanings, such as "evolutionary humanism" and "liberal humanism".

1) The democratic nation-state basically operates like a criminal cartel, forcing honest citizens to surrender large portions of their wealth to pay for stuff like roads and hospitals and schools. Advertisement 2) The rise of the internet, and the advent of cryptocurrencies, will make it impossible for governments to intervene in private transactions and to tax incomes, thereby liberating individuals from the political protection racket of democracy. 3) The state will consequently become obsolete as a political entity. 4) Out of this wreckage will emerge a new global dispensation, in which a “cognitive elite” will rise to power and influence, as a class of sovereign individuals “commanding vastly greater resources” who will no longer be subject to the power of nation-states and will redesign governments to suit their ends.

http://ift.tt/2EpwQY6

Despite this, over the last five or six years, I have seen evidence that Mormon bishops are maybe learning to handle reports of family violence better. Many now recommend professional counseling, or in extreme cases recommend calling the police, even standing alongside a woman to support her calling the police and filing a claim. But this is still new. And these are not all Mormon bishops. Many are just like the ones that Porter’s wives described. They warn against going public or making an accusation to law enforcement, or even having the bishop talk to both of them to indicate that he knows what is going on, so as to keep the stories of abuse quiet.

The Space-Biff! Historical Journal | BoardGameGeek

http://ift.tt/2ErZ2tw

Avatar hanibalicious wrote: Genuinely one of the few games we agree on (note- I love your writing style- indeed, over in our GCL we're talking about what makes a good review... and you specifically), and that's saying quite a bit. Thanks for linking that, if only because it's incredibly disconcerting seeing my writing discussed on the internet. I’ve never been entirely clear on how to respond to such things. Interesting, too, because even that short discussion contains an entire essay's worth of responses that I would love to write if only I had the time and inclination. Not necessarily counterpoints so much as mournful agreements. For instance, I abhor most reviewers' fear of subjectivity and the compulsion to be as positive as possible in order to keep the gravy train of review copies flowing. In fact, those are two of the main reasons that I keep Space-Biff! running. When I began, I was tired of seeing reviews that were poorly written, broke their back reaching for that mythological objectivity, didn't strive to capture the way a game felt, and came across as shills. Because of these realities, it often feels as though I'm fighting an uphill battle. When I'm positive, I'm accused of being too positive. When I'm negative, I'm accused of being too negative. When I try to write about independent titles at the expense of the stuff that will generate two hundred reviews within a month of publication, I come across as being contrarian. When I strive to discuss both the good and bad about a game, which is my main goal for any review, it seems like I'm avoiding a firm stance. The truth of the matter is that I'm being as subjective as possible. Whether I liked or disliked a game, I regard it as my "job" to explain why that was, as clearly and crisply as possible, while doing my best to ignore how a publisher (or a friend, or my audience) will feel about my conclusions. Again, I sympathize with some of your GCL-mates' perspectives on critical positivity. As someone who's now spent some time on the "inside" of this industry, I've seen many of these issues firsthand. Offers for paid previews, publishers attempting to strong-arm favorable write-ups, content outlets fearful of losing advertising money, sock-puppet legions of harassers with identical IP addresses waging war on something they disagreed with... for an industry with so much growing up ahead of us, we have our share of hair on our chest. Which is why I’m doing the best I can to keep a clear head, stay independent, and write the same type of reviews that I value whenever they pop up elsewhere: subjective, personal, expressive, and opinionated. If one of my reviews doesn’t explain why a game did or did not appeal to another person — well, it wasn’t mean to. It was meant to explain why something appealed to me. I make an effort to account for other tastes and explain enough about the game to help a prospective game-player and -purchaser make a decision, but a mind-reader is the last career I could lay claim to. Hopefully, people who disagree with my assessments will feel free to drop a comment on my site and have an open discussion about what we both value in a design. As an aside, I also got a good chuckle thanks to the fellow who wasn't very excited about my earliest reviews. We'd probably be in agreement about the majority of those. I tend to believe that it's fine to own your past, mistakes and all, which is why I keep those active rather than quietly taking them down. When I entered this hobby, my only touchstones became my first reviews, which were positive because I was having a good time with my friends and family. I like to think my tastes have matured. Hopefully. Probably a better idea to start at the back end rather than the front, is what I’m saying.

Beyond New York, a perfect storm of ribbon-cutting fetishizing, environmentalism and envy of other countries has led to high-speed rail mania. Although zippy trains are nifty, they zoom past the fact America has the best rail system — for our needs. In Europe, trucks move goods and trains move people. In America, we do it the other way around.

Major Neurological Conditions Have More In Common Than We Thought, Study Finds : The Two-Way : NPR

Broadly, that includes fewer genes involved in signaling between neurons and more genes related to neuroinflammatory cells. There are areas of clear divergence, too — an increase in genes related to a certain kind of neuroinflammatory cell was present in patients with autism, but not those with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Major depression was very distinct, he says. "And alcoholism didn't overlap with any of them at all."

The Healthiest People In The World Eat A Lot Of Carbs | HuffPost

Japan’s nutrition guidelines reflect the country’s traditional diet, which is high in grains, fish and soybean products, but low in fat. In the U.S., where the tide appears to be turning against grains and toward larger intakes of fat, Japan’s contrasting food guidelines are a good reminder that there’s no “correct” way to eat nutritious food — just different styles that suit different people and cultures best. Given their diet of whole, unprocessed foods, as well as their active lifestyle, it’s no wonder that Japanese people can tolerate more grains than the average American, said DiNicolantonio. “I think the best takeaway for Americans, when looking at the Japanese, is that if we restrict our intake of refined sugar, industrial seed oils, and increase [our] intake of marine omega-3s, then we might be able to tolerate eating more rice,” he said.

One of the good things I would say here is that once you make business relationships, they tend to last. In the UK I would often come across the situation of having clients disappear to someone else based on cost: if Photographer X down the road was delivering Product A for £1 less an hour, then they'd move. That doesn't happen in Japan. Trust and relationships take longer to build, which can be frustrating at first, but once you've made that relationship it isn't really ever going to go south over trifling amounts of money.

And number two - antibiotics kill off the friendly bacteria in the digestive tract, which then allows the growth of harmful bacteria. So further down the track you'll very likely end up with other problems (along with a painful re-occurrence of your urinary tract infection) such as chronic candida overload (thrush). This is a serious problem as candida fungus release toxic "candida buds" that eventually find their way into the blood stream and poison your blood!

At Pilgrim’s Pride, between 2012 and 2015, operating margins grew from 3.8 percent to 12.77 percent. The first lawsuit brought against the processors was a class action filed by a food wholesaler, Maplevale Farms, in September 2016. That suit alleged that from 2008 onward, Tyson and Pilgrim’s Pride coordinated their efforts to reduce their broiler stock and forced a “nearly 50 percent increase in Broiler wholesale prices since 2008, despite input costs (primarily corn and soybeans) falling roughly 20 percent to 23 percent over the same time period.” Maplevale claimed that consequently, it paid inflated prices for chicken over the course of several years.

The researchers also looked for the sweet spot for protein intake, which turned out to be about 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. In practical terms, that would amount to about 130 grams of protein a day for a 175-pound man. (A chicken breast has about 45 grams of protein.) He’d rather not be called a prescient visionary. “Every imaginary future ever written is about the time it was written in,” he said. “People talk about science fiction’s predictive possibilities, but that’s a byproduct. Nabokov had been reading deeply into serialism, a philosophy positing that time is reversible. The theory came from J. W. Dunne, a British engineer and armchair philosopher who, in 1927, published “An Experiment with Time,” arguing, in part, that our dreams afforded us rare access to a higher order of time. Was it possible that we were glimpsing snatches of the future in our dreams—that what we wrote off as déjà vu was actually a leap into the metaphysical ether? Dunne himself claimed to have had no fewer than eight precognitive dreams, including one in which he foresaw a headline about a volcanic eruption.

London’s fatberg on show: ‘We thought of pickling it’ | Culture | The Guardian

http://ift.tt/2EcNQQn

“We have lots of weapons at our disposal,” Saunders says, “but sometimes, as with the Whitechapel one, it is so impacted that a lot of it is the teams going down and chiselling away by hand.” In London, which has a magnified version of a universal problem because the sewers are so large, this work never stops. Thames Water has teams working full time; usually they are aware of five or six fatbergs that are growing. Some cause immediate blockages, others like the one in Whitechapel don’t. Saunders estimates the work costs £1m a month, but that doesn’t include the collateral damage of “sewage flooding living rooms and public spaces cordoned off and out of bounds because they are contaminated”. Because the substance itself is somewhat volatile though, and of an unusual consistency, they still had to rewrite procedure to work out how to deal with it. “We had our head of conservation look at it,” Sparkes says. “We initially thought about pickling it like one of Damien Hirst’s cows. The problem with that, we felt, was that it would likely make it liquid and runny.” What they did instead was to dry the samples. They did this at different rates, uncertain how it would respond. In the event, the one that was dried most quickly has crumbled into pieces; the other remains intact. Health and safety was an inevitable concern. “Worst case scenario if it is handled incorrectly is death,” Sparkes suggests. “It has come out of the sewer so it might contain Weil’s disease.”

Our capacity for love increases with each person we cross paths with throughout our lives, and with each moment we spend with those people. But, too often we neglect that part of ourselves in favor of others. And by the time we realize just how important it is, we find ourselves with fewer folks around to practice with. But the seven of you have something that nobody else ever had: time. All the time in the world. Time enough to grow indescribably close. Time enough to learn how to care for each other, how to allow yourselves to be cared for.

Meet the pirate queen making academic papers free online - The Verge

http://ift.tt/2sgWqcb

The prices rise because a few top players have positioned themselves with the power to ratchet them up with impunity. Over half of all research, according to one study, is now published by the big five of academic publishing: Reed-Elsevier, Wiley-Blackwell, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and, depending on the metric, either the American Chemical Society or Sage Publishing. That’s a significant change from 1973, when only 20 percent of these kinds of papers were published by the big five. And that’s just for natural and medical science papers; the social sciences have it worse. In 1973, only one in 10 articles debuted in the big five’s pages; now it’s more than half. For some fields, such as psychology, 71 percent of all papers now go through these players. That worked well until the domain LibGen.org, went down, deleting 40,000 papers Elbakyan had collected, probably because one of its administrators died of cancer. “One of my friends suggested to start actively collecting donations on Sci-Hub,” she says. “I started a crowdfunding campaign on Sci-Hub to buy additional drives, and soon had my own copy of the database collected by LibGen, around 21 million papers. Around 1 million of these papers [were] uploaded from Sci-Hub. The other[s], as I was told, came from databases that were downloaded on the darknet.” From then on, LibGen’s database would simply be her backup. Elbakyan created several more backup copies of Sci-Hub’s database. She rewrote Sci-Hub’s code, starting from square one, so that the service could download papers automatically. Now, once users pointed Sci-Hub toward an article, the site would check every university proxy server until it found one through which it could download the paper, and would download it automatically. They didn’t have to manually browse the publisher’s website through Sci-Hub to find the articles anymore.

1. Cut the cauliflower into small florets. 2. Toss with non-olive vegetable oil. 3. Roast in the oven at 350 until well browned. 4. Take a shitload of fresh smashed garlic cloves and shallots and cook them slowly in the pan until they are carmelized and brown and crispy. Do this on fairly low heat because you do not want to burn them. 5. Toss the roasted cauliflower in the pan with the garlic and shallots. 6. To the cauliflower, shallots and garlic in the pan add, in this order: sliced fresh chilis (which you should allow to brown slightly along with the other veg); fish sauce (a little goes a long way, but I would use a fair amount--say 1-2 tbsp for a good sized head of caulifower); fresh mint (you can add fresh thai basil if you've got it). 7. If you would like some crunch, you can roast some cooked rice (in a pan in the oven) until crispy and toss it in.

New Hampshire winner of $560M lottery says she made a 'huge mistake'

The lawsuit, filed last week, describes the woman as an "engaged community member."  "She wishes to continue this work and the freedom to walk into a grocery store or attend public events without being known or targeted as the winner of a half-billion dollars," the complaint said. It adds that she plans on remaining in New Hampshire and giving back "to the state and community that has given so much to her."

I mean, if you think that everybody knew about Louis … everyone knew about Kevin Spacey. I was on SNL from ’89 to 2004 and I don’t remember when he hosted, but I remember very distinctly being like, “He’s hitting on the pages. He’s hitting on the young men in the talent department.” It’s the most open secret that’s ever existed. I didn’t know the extent to which the behavior was predatory certainly, but no one didn’t know. Anyone who had ever worked with that guy knew that. Ted Danson calls me very frequently on the phone just to tell me that he had a fun time at work today. He’ll just say, like, “What fun, and the things I get to do, and it’s so wonderful, and just, thank you so much.” It’s bizarre. It feels like you’re on a prank show. I have found that my current predominant feeling is just shame that we’re allowing ourselves to live under the rule of people this stupid. You know what I mean? It’s not a new observation, it just feels like it’s shifted from anger to, like, “Oh, I feel so sad that we allowed this to happen, and I don’t know how to cope with that.” Every day I wake up and I feel like the political climate has poured a syrup of ipecac into my mouth and if I don’t vomit up my thoughts on Twitter, I’m going to die. I feel like it’s a purge of anger and frustration and fear.

(The singer Jewel has written extensively about the pressure she’s felt to correct her smile, acknowledging she is “best known for having crooked teeth” and describing the experience of wearing prosthetics for a film role as “not that I felt prettier as much as I suddenly felt … normal.”) The goal is always uniformity, with no discernible gap or overlap; viewed from the slightest distance, the teeth should resemble a gleaming-white solid strip of plastic. When I asked Burris what differentiates his smile, he cited a devotion to absolute straightness. “It’s the very upright, very visible torque on the upper incisors.”
