Trash Talk :: Topic: Games that don't exist but should. (1/2)
http://ift.tt/2zRj1iV
I'm too lazy to find the old thread. If you include a game in this discussion, please attach a theme, because games without themes are really just a pile of mechanics. I would like to see a solo game based on the book Moby *****, something like that Nemo game from VPG. - You could cruise around and try to get whale oil - You have to juggle your harpooners and decide how to arrange your crews on the whaling boats - There could be a Starbuck track. He is the most competent crew member, and is bound by his Christian morality to obey Ahab, but if you push him too far he might take the blunderbuss/gun and shoot you in your sleep, thus damning himself to hell while saving the crew - There are like nine encounters with other whaling ships, and each of them involves transactions and/or potential conflict or competition for whales - There is a degree of existential horror that is right up there with HP Lovecraft Maybe it would look something like Eldritch Horror. I doubt it would ever be popular given the theme.

Doing It Yourself!! The best way to learn songs you like is by TRANSCRIBING songs yourself! seriously - that is the truth! So actually better than using tabs or songbooks or lessons is to work out songs on your own and make your own charts! It is nowhere as hard as you might think if you have never tried it - it is the way that generations of guitar players before you learnt to play!! And I have loads of lessons on it to help get you going... and just imagine, when you've developed your ear - you can work out whatever songs you like!! No need for tab at all - it's amazing and that is what "real" musicians do. In the old days nobody had tab - you think Jimi and Clapton got tabs off a web site???

At this point, the industry's highest-paid screenwriter, who earns $4 million a script (and another $1 million if the film gets made), could make a fine living by simply rehashing his past successes. He already has agreed to tackle a live staging of his first breakout, A Few Good Men, for NBC, though now he reveals he'll need to push back its planned spring 2018 airdate another year. It was a phone call from Carrie Fisher, then a virtual stranger, who made him consider the alternative: "I know you think you're not going to be able to write," he remembers Fisher telling him, "but I promise your writing is going to get better."

Yes it does. I make Gluten free bread all the time with machine. I mix the milk butter eggs. I then heat to 115 degrees. I pour the liquid into the container. I then pour the flour in on top of the liquid. Make sure the container is room temperature. I use an extra egg and an extra tablespoon of yeast. I then make a pocket in the flour for the yeast. Set the bread darkness to light. Then set the cook level to number 11, the sandwich setting. Push start and use a rubber scrapper for only the first start up mix, then leave it alone till it has finished. After it has completed its cycle, remove the loaf and place on a rack. There are several bread mixes ready with a yeast packet, or you simply use the cook book that comes with the bread maker. It makes awesome bread every time. After my second loaf, and I made the changes to the recipes the bread is better than any store bread. I hope this will help answer your question. I make excellent raisin bread, and the sourdough bread isn't too shabby.

In his new book Kids These Days: Human Capital and the Making of Millennials, he warns that we ought to take the historical formation of this cohort seriously, because it represents a single point of failure for a society veering toward oligarchy and/or dystopia. We will either become “the first generation of true American fascists” or “the first generation of successful American revolutionaries.” No pressure, though.

It is not only Persian youngsters that are prepared to fight for the right to eat tà h deeg: the thin crust of scorched rice that sticks to the bottom of the pot:- Spanish speakers from Puerto Rico to Colombia called it (el) pegado Among Dominicans it is called con-con In parts of the US it is known as stuck-pot rice In Cantonese it is called noan. Nurungji is traditional (south) Korean food Vietnamese speakers call it com chay Among Wolof speakers this quality of rice is called xóón. In some places, young girls are discouraged from eating scorched rice by their elders. They are warned that no man would want to marry them if they (continued) eating not-acquired-enough tastiness.. And there I was looking – as you do - at Japanese gay slang and came across the word Okege. What does it mean? Well, it is the term used for the burnt rice that sticks to the bottom of a cooking pot. But interestingly, it is also a term for a woman who associates regularly with gay men. Is it me or is their a link between these women (with those associates) and the consequences of those (possibly) unheeded warnings made by those elders who knew (and know) better?

And again, the body with all its graphic functions is present when unfiltered speaker has to poop, says men don’t wipe after urinating, and talks in absolutes like “every wet entrance to the body is a TELL.” “Good Manners” is more of that gently vulgar relationship imagery from “Biblicality.” Loe’s speaker compares the scruff of a man’s neck to a Lincoln Log, her farts are mistaken for those of the dog, and vows to put her “best boob forward.” This section is another epic lite, but filled with little aphorisms such as “I told you to never trust silence in the bathroom” and “Loving anyone in the summer is excessive. Everything is already touching you./We didn’t ever run into any summers.”

Rhetoric and Beyond: Expanding Our Views on Writing in RTTP Courses** Toby F. Coley, PhD Assistant Professor of English, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor; Deborah Maltby, Associate Teaching Professor of English, University of Missouri-St. Louis RTTP faculty actively discuss and share problems, ideas, and strategy through a dynamic private Facebook Faculty Lounge. Trolling the past six months of FB questions and comments reveals that many participants value good writing and welcome ideas for helping students write better in RTTP. One basic tool for helping students write better is an understanding of rhetoric and rhetorical moves. In this roundtable session, we'll begin with how utilizing principles of ancient rhetoric in the Athens game helps composition students with both the game and the writing. We'll explore how these principles can be used in teaching writing in all RTTP games. With that foundation, we'll build on the knowledge and experience of other RTTP faculty who value good writing in RTTP, asking participants to weigh in on what has worked for them, what they have changed, and what they still haven't resolved. I think we’ve been fairly good at keeping up the morale of some people who might otherwise just give up because they’re not having enough fun. So many anxieties. Which is really understandable, especially these days. I think that our style and the type of approach that we’ve used, which acknowledges the troubles, but casts them into a different light, allows you to take a step back and see, and allows you to count your blessings, if you have any. It’s the kind of thing a lot of people forget.

But there were some unfortunate side-effects of this heightened corporate consciousness. First, according to one former middle manager, it was virtually impossible for anyone outside the company to understand this new language the employees were speaking. Second, the manager said, the new language “led to a lot more meetings” and the sheer amount of time wasted nurturing their newfound states of higher consciousness meant that “everything took twice as long”. “If the energy that had been put into Kroning had been put to the business at hand, we all would have gotten a lot more done,” said the manager.

Andreessen wrote back to say that it would be Horowitz’s fault if the company failed: “Next time do the fucking interview yourself. Ratko Mladic Is Convicted in 1990s Slaughter of Bosnian Muslims - The New York Times
http://ift.tt/2zWBv0B
The deadliest year of the campaign was 1992, when 45,000 people died, often in their homes, on the streets or in a string of concentration camps. Others perished in the nearly four-year siege of Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital, where snipers and shelling terrorized residents for more than three years, and in the mass executions of 8,000 Muslim men and boys after Mr. Mladic’s forces overran the United Nations-protected enclave of Srebrenica. Survivors called Mr. Mladic the Butcher of Bosnia. His defense lawyers argued that Mr. Mladic was largely following orders from politicians above him, and that any atrocities committed by his subordinates and militias were not done at his direction.

Brian Eno & Roger Waters Respond To Nick Cave’s Press Conference About BDS Movement - Stereogum

The BDS argument is simple enough: Israel has consistently — and lavishly — used cultural exchange as a form of “hasbara” (propaganda) to improve the image of the country abroad, and to “show Israel’s prettier face” in the words of a foreign ministry official. The BDS campaign is simply asking artists not to be part of that propaganda campaign.

Story - Fireman - FamilySearch.org
http://ift.tt/2mJZMln
“I was fireman and usually oiled all the machinery before starting to run [turn on the motor that operates the large, circular saw blade]. This task I had almost finished, except the oil cups around the saw cab, before we went to dinner. Bill returned just before I did – turned on the power and had gone some little distance away for something. I hurriedly took the oiler so that I might finish before the other hands came to work. This I did without turning off the power, and while reaching way over to get the last bearing, some part of my clothing must have caught the set screw in one of the large collars on the 12 ft. steel shaft. At any rate I felt myself caught and whirled rapidly around for a time --- then I must have lost consciousness, and when I came to I was in a stationary position, lying on my back, crosswise of this rapidly revolving shaft. I was in great pain and began call to Will to stop the mill --- but before he reached the engine I was thrown a considerable distance from the mill, landing in a pile of sawdust. Bill came and helped me up. I had no clothes on except my shoes and part of my socks. Coming later to the shaft, I found my [Temple] garments wrapped as neatly around it as one might wind a bobbin. Removing them from the shaft I found they were not badly torn or damaged, but with a little mending they were wearable. My shirt and trousers were so badly cut to pieces, nothing could be done with them. I was not seriously injured, though greatly bruised and shocked. I have no explanation as to how this last mentioned came about, but I know again that divine providence was with me.”

"A creature performer needs to be a very odd combination of marathon runner and a mime, who can express himself through layers and layers of latex and acrylic and silicon," said del Toro, who has worked with Jones on six of his feature films. "It's a very, very rare discipline … [and] there are very, very few that are actual actors, in my opinion, that go beyond being able to work in a suit or under makeup. Doug is a proper actor. When you need that level of finesse, Doug is the only one I've met that I trust with that level of commitment and craftsmanship and artistry."

Lesson 42: Continuing Revelation to Latter-day Prophets
http://ift.tt/2zN3Gz8
“Expecting the spectacular, one may not be fully alerted to the constant flow of revealed communication. I say, in the deepest of humility, but also by the power and force of a burning testimony in my soul, that from the prophet of the Restoration to the prophet of our own year, the communication line is unbroken, the authority is continuous, a light, brilliant and penetrating, continues to shine. The sound of the voice of the Lord is a continuous melody and a thunderous appeal. For nearly a century and a half there has been no interruption” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1977, 115; or Ensign, May 1977, 78).

You may not be aware of the fact that the term "linoleum tile" has a very specific meaning in the flooring industry. It refers to the 9" square flooring tiles that were constructed with a separate vinyl wear layer and a paper backing material, much like the linoleums of the time were constructed. I don't know if you meant to use that term specifically, or you just meant "old vinyl tiles".

Alternatively, we could all take a step back from the current witch hunt and try to gain some perspective. In the words of Walter Kirn, "Everyone loves a witch hunt as long as it's someone else's witch being hunted." I suspect that the overwhelming majority of men have offended at least one woman at least once at some point in time. In some cases, it was an outrageous sex crime, while in others, it was an ill-advised but perfectly legal sexual advance on a colleague, or even just an offensive joke. Treating all of these offenders the same way is simplistic and wrong, especially when insisting that every offender must be fired, locked up, and/or financially ruined.

The Final Rhapsody of Charles Bowden – Mother Jones
http://ift.tt/2jzsm7J
Bowden’s last report, for instance, was a confession by a member of the Chihuahua State Police who tortured and killed hundreds of people for a Juárez drug cartel. El Sicario, the assassin, describes in detail how there was no separation between the police and the cartel, how he was just following orders, and how he found himself in Hell. For instance, he became an expert at boiling people alive in a big kettle of water, keeping them alive for a day, long enough to get them to talk — you have a hook and you keep pulling them out and slicing off the dead flesh because they can’t feel that, and you have a doctor there pumping them with adrenaline so they won’t die. Bowden talked to the sicario for months before he would open up, and then the more Bowden listened, the more he came to see the man as a normal human being, not evil. And then Bowden began to like him. They became friends.

The Cheapening of the Comics
http://ift.tt/2AL7dLf
Peanuts has held my interest for many years because the strip is very funny on one level and very sad on another. Charlie Brown suffers - and suffers in a small, private, honest way. Schultz draws those quiet moments of self-doubt: Charlie Brown sitting on the bench, eating peanut butter, trying to work up the nerve to talk to the little red-haired girl - and failing. As a kid, I read Peanuts for the funny drawings and the jokes, and later I realized that the childhood struggles of the strip are metaphors for adult struggles as well. Peanuts is about the search for acceptance, security, and love, and how hard those self-affirming things are to find. The strip is also about alienation, about ambition, about heroes, about religion, and about the search for meaning and "happiness" in life. For a comic strip, it digs pretty deep.

The big thing here at the farm is to be prepared to ask for help, and I am. I need food, cash money, hay, firewood, snow-shoveling, (pet friendly) salt, sweetfeed for horses and sheep. Some treats for the dogs, too, maybe. And hair dryers for my frozen pipes. I'm going to post that dire message on Facebook about how much trouble I am in, and just go out to lunch and leave the barn door open. There are a lot of good people out there, they are ready to go, eager to help, all I need is for a few of them to feel sorry for me and bring me stuff. When the storm is over, I will be set. How neat that we can all help one another. I'll be sure and send some notecards of appreciation. So that is my survival guide for "Pickles." Oh yes, we are heading out for wine and cheese popcorn and some more pistachio nuts.

AJ is an individual, who has difficulties forgetting. In fact, she can remember what happened in her life rather precisely to the point of recalling each day 20, 30 years ago: when she got up, what was on TV, who called her, etc. Rather than being happy about such immense recall, AJ is quite troubled by it. All of the wrong decisions she took in her past are always present, to the point of limiting her ability to decide and act in the present. Often she seems to see only trees, not the forest.

The persecution and “othering” that Mormons suffered during their recent first century probably sensitizes them more than, say, white Alabama Baptists, to the persecution of minorities.

Full-Size vs. Fun-Size Candy Bars: A Halloween Assessment - The Atlantic
http://ift.tt/2z6g24E
Handing out full-size bars cheats Halloween guests out of this specific experience of fun, replacing it with the one they already know. Of course, it’s true that finding the house that gives out the full-size bars is fun in a different way. Being that house is also fun. But not gastronomically. Quickly, the pride of being the best house on the block gives way to shame, and the excitement of having the best haul buckles into boredom. When kids return home with the big Snickers or 3 Musketeers, what then? Who cares. They’ve done all this before.

Hi, I just got a deal on an X100 and am waiting for it to arrive from Qatar, and was looking about and saw that Michael Hanke of the Czech Republic just received the second prize for the category of Sports: Stories in the World Photojournalism contest. The cool thing is that he shot these photos with a Fuji X100. Youth Chess Tournaments I have no relation or connection to this guy, but love the idea of shooting world class photos with older gear. His Instagram: Michael Hanke Photography (@michaelhanke.photography) • Instagram photos and videos He didn't start shooting until he was forty years old.

Fake news White also learned some unexpected lessons. When she first started the project over five years ago, she wasn't a Twitter user yet, and she was overwhelmed by the "offensiveness" of what she found. She needed to check in on the undergrads analyzing tweets to make sure they "weren’t getting overloaded by some of the awful stuff that people write on social media." After years of this occasionally harrowing data analysis, King and White determined that it only took three stories in small outlets to boost public discussion of a given topic by 62.7 percent on Twitter. The same number of stories also swayed public opinion by about 2.3 percent in the direction of the stories' ideological positions. So media may not be able to change our opinions very much, but it can certainly change what we're talking about.

Card catalogs and the secret history of modernity

In Control Through Communication, her study of 19th century information management, JoAnne Yates identifies five breakthrough technologies. There’s the telephone and telegraph, which handle external communication. For internal communication, the big three are the typewriter, carbon paper (and other duplication technologies), and filing systems, especially the vertical file and card catalog. What makes card catalogs more magical than machine readable catalogs is that they carry in them the passage of time. Books acquired early in a library’s history might have handwritten cards, while later purchases could have typewritten cards; printed cards might be annotated and updated by hand; and there might even be cards for books that have not yet been cataloged. The best card catalogs are time machines built on the most accessible and inexpensive of technologies—and that’s even before you get to the books.

Around the Church I hear many who struggle with this issue: “I am just not good enough.” “I fall so far short.” “I will never measure up.” I hear this from teenagers. I hear it from missionaries. I hear it from new converts. I hear it from lifelong members. One insightful Latter-day Saint, Sister Darla Isackson, has observed that Satan has somehow managed to make covenants and commandments seem like curses and condemnations. For some he has turned the ideals and inspiration of the gospel into self-loathing and misery-making.3

Cory Doctorow: How to Do Everything (Lifehacking Considered Harmful) – Locus Online
http://ift.tt/2hORgwm
Allen’s book is a fantastic and inspiring read. The core of his philosophy is to recognize that there are more things in the world that you want to do than you could do, and that, in the absence of a deliberate approach to this conundrum, you are likely to default to doing things that are easy to scratch off your to-do list, which are also the most trivial. After a lifetime of this, you’ll have accomplished a lot of very little.

Amazon.com: Hamilton Beach Programmable Bread Machine, 2-Pound Bread Maker with Gluten-Free Setting (29882): Bread Machines: Kitchen & Dining
http://ift.tt/2zDoXc7
Though this bread machine has what is called a "gluten free" setting, and there are several recipes in the manual that apparently work, the folks at HB did not do their homework on the needs of gluten free ingredients. The GF setting still has THREEE rises instead of one, and the baking time is not extended for the wetter ingredient mix in GF recipes. Thus the whole GF cycle from start to finish for a 2lb loaf is 3 hrs 42 min, (3 hr 32 min for 1.5 lb loaf) instead of what it should be (about 1.5 hrs.). Gluten free ingredients are more like batter than dough and are easy to mix, though need some scraping of the sides of the pan at the very first. There is no benefit from all these rises and knock downs, since you do not have to develop the gluten. In fact they contribute to a lower rise in the end. Calling their cycle "gluten free" is a marketing scam. For better loaves, quicker cooking and more versatility, just use the first part of the dough cycle, then time your rise. Then use the bake setting. Test your loaf for doneness with an instant thermometer (about 200°F and comes out clean) . If you want a machine with an actual gluten free setting with the parameters geared to real gluten free recipes, try a Cuisinart CBK 100 or 200 or a programmable " Z ". I myself am waiting to find a Cuisinart at a thrift store and meanwhile making do with this machine that I got for $40 at Walmart, thinking it had a GF cycle. There are make-do recipes online that use regular Basic White cycles for gluten free bread if you do not mind the extra total cooking time and reduced quality loaves. In general they are better than what is available ready made in the stores. There is no reason in particular to buy this machine just because it says it has a gluten free cycle

BoardGameGeek | Gaming Unplugged Since 2000

One piece of advice though, the game plays much better using several of the optional rules in the back from earlier editions of Wiz-War (you should also use the old-school tile sides). We use Deadly Treasures, Uncluttered Minds, and mix every spell school in. Also, we took some advice found here on the forums that suggested removing most of the boring counterspells - this is a great suggestion that vastly improves the experience. You get more deadly combat, wizards actually die, and the game doesn't devolve into a foot race to the opponents treasure (although that is still there in smaller doses). I wouldn't rate this game quite as high without these changes.

Press Release | Press Releases | Newsroom | U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut: “As my colleagues go to sleep tonight, they need to think about whether the political support of the gun industry is worth the blood that flows endlessly onto the floors of American churches, elementary schools, movie theaters, and city streets. Ask yourself – how can you claim that you respect human life while choosing fealty to weapons-makers over support for measures favored by the vast majority of your constituents.

Press Release | Press Releases | Newsroom | U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut: "The paralysis you feel right now – the impotent helplessness that washes over you as news of another mass slaughter scrolls across the television screen – isn’t real. It's a fiction created and methodically cultivated by the gun lobby, designed to assure that no laws are passed to make America safer, because those laws would cut into their profits.
